Overwhelmed? Manage Your Time Are you feeling overwhelmed or overwhelmed? Are you overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to do, and the time it takes to complete them? There are so many things to do and people to talk to you. It would be great if you got home at a reasonable time to see your family and friends. Maybe you made a resolution not to be so far behind, not to feel disorganized, and to spend less time at the office. Let’s look at some easy and quick changes that you can make to feel less overwhelmed.

  • You should know how you spend your time. This is not to suggest that you are lazy. But do you really know where most of your time goes? You should first find a simple and accurate way to track your time so you are aware of what is taking up the most of your time.
  • Spend your time in the right way. Also, are you following the correct priorities, the critical path for ALL the work you are given? If so, Skip to #3. If you don’t, it’s time to take a step back and evaluate why you do what you do. Why is it that you aren’t focusing on the most important priorities at a given moment? It is essential to align your work with the most important priorities. It is not enough just to be busy. You must be busy doing the right work at the right time.
  • Don’t be unreasonable. Are you always expecting to do more than is actually possible? You are probably expecting too much if your to-do lists keep growing each day and week into the next. There are only 24 hours in each day, so you need to eat and sleep. Your work load needs to be reassessed. You can remove some items from your to-do-list. Is it really worth the effort? Stop doing unnecessary work.
  • You can delegate or offload items on your to-do lists that are high-priority items that add value, but not necessarily need to be done by you. There is a reason you have a team.
  • Make a plan. A plan and a schedule are essential for your projects. You should have one for your projects, too. Are you aware of your priorities for the week, the month, and the quarter? Track all important milestones, both personal and professional. Don’t let your family or career plans get in the way of your work.
  • Use your plan. Do you review your plans before you finish your day? Note any discrepancies. Have you reviewed what is planned for tomorrow? Do not be the person who runs down the hall to get to a meeting or presentation just because she forgot to review her plans last night.
  • Only one calendar is necessary. It is easy to sync your calendars in this day and age. It is easy to overbook yourself when you have a calendar at home, a calendar at work, and a schedule for other activities.
  • Take a break. You read that right. Take a break if you feel overwhelmed. Do not call in sick, and come back when you feel calm. Don’t try to do more and work harder. Take some time to unwind. Take a walk around this building. Turn your back on your computer. A little bit of relaxation can go a long way.
  • Are you feeling overwhelmed? These tips can help you take a look at your time management and give you some ideas. Please feel free to share your top tips in the comments so we can all learn from each other!

Some people believe certifications such as the PMP should be taken as quickly as possible. Many people also drift through college, taking the easiest classes and doing what is necessary to get the paper. This may be what you want, however, it is not what you need. I’m here to tell you what you need, even if it’s not what you want. So here’s me taking you by the shoulders and explaining how I see it. I want you to understand what works. Here we go. Listen up, I take a firm line on this. If you want to learn more about the PMI framework, take the PMP exam. This exam may be your first glimpse into formal project management. That’s awesome. If you have the experience to take the PMP exam, then go for it. Do not try to rush your application through just to get a piece on paper. You don’t build your career with just pieces of paper. You can only build a successful career with hard work, education, and experience. If you aren’t sure that the PMP exam is all that will make you a good candidate, then go for it. Don’t believe that a piece of paper will land you a job. There is more to a job as a project manager than that. The bottom line: If you want to pass your PMP exam quickly and easily, then look elsewhere. I can’t help but to tell you. Instead, spend a few thousand dollars on a “PMP bootcamp”. I know that some people love them, but they make me feel creepy-crawlies. If you’d like to:
