How to collaborate with instructors in WebAssign

Posted on December 23, 2022 By Dave

While collaboration is an important tool for navigating uncertainty, it becomes more difficult in online environments.
WebAssign makes it easier to collaborate from anywhere. You can share resources, courses, and class data to maintain cohesion in your course or across multiple sections. WebAssign allows you to collaborate with other instructors, professors, and teaching assistants.
Create & share course shells with other instructors
Course administrators
Many schools designate an online champion to help faculty members transition to online courses quickly. It can be a blessing and a curse depending on which platform you use. WebAssign makes it easy to create and share course shells among multiple faculty members in just a few steps.
Step 1: Create Your Course
Start by creating your course. You’d like your fellow instructors to have the exact same assignments and settings. Make sure you add your Course Packs, customize the settings, and schedule your assignments before sharing your course.

Step 2: Share your Course Shell With Other Instructors
Once you have created your parent course, it will be possible to copy it to other sections or instructors’ accounts. This will allow them to use it in their own curriculum. Here’s how:
Select Copy Course: From the Class Tools menu, on the left-hand side, select Copy to New Sections to create new sections or Copy to an Existing Course to copy an existing shell course. This will take to the course copying webpage.
Select Copy Options: You’ll find your current course in the window labeled Copy from. Click the (+) next To Advanced Options to choose whether you would like to create a different version of your assignments or restrictions.

View New Section and Add More Sections: Next you will find your new section in the bottom window. You will see one section appear, but you can add additional sections by clicking the Add a Section button.
Name and Assign Sections: Name the section, select the instructor, and enter the class meeting times. If you are unsure of the instructor, enter your name and the class meeting time.

If you have customized the GradeBook settings in your parent course, you can access Advanced Options to copy them.
When you are ready, click Copy Section Schedule.
Questions and Assignments to Share
For Instructor-to-Instructor Collaboration in WebAssign
You can use Course Packs and other resources to build your course. It is also a great way for instructors to share assignments and ask questions with each other.
How to share questions

To ask a question of others:
Navigate to Questions from the top menu, and then select My Questions.
Click Edit next to the question that you would like to share.
Next, you will need to set the permission for your question. By default, all new questions are protected. This allows other instructors to use your question in their assignments if they share the question ID.
If your question contains textbooks or copyrighted materials, change the permission to Copyright. Public is if all of your content is original. Other instructors may search for the question and use it in their assignments.
If you wish to allow a group to edit the question, select Group. You can create new groups or manage the permissions of existing members. Instructors who aren’t part of the group can’t search for your question and can only use it in their assignments if you or another instructor provides the question ID.

You can share the question ID (the number in parentheses following the question name) with other instructors. However, you will only be able to edit the question. Other instructors can choose to duplicate it if they wish.

How to share assignments

Similar to asking questions, you will need to:
Edit the Sharing section of the associated assignment templates to grant permissions. Choose Protected if you have original questions (not from the textbook). Instructors must only have the assignment ID to schedule your assignment.
If you have an assignment, select Copyright

AWS Introduces Controls to Block Public Access to S3 This week, Amazon Web Services (AWS), introduced a new feature that allows administrators to block public access to their data. This is to reduce the number of data leaks due to mismanaged Amazon S3 buckets. The “Amazon S3 Block Public Access” feature is actually a set of four security settings that administrators can activate or disable across their entire AWS account, or per-bucket basis. Once the settings have been turned on, they will apply to the current environment as well as any future buckets. In a blog post, Jeff Barr, AWS evangelist, stated that you have the ability to block public access to existing items (whether it was specified in an ACL [access control lists] or a policy) as well as to prevent public access to new items. Blocking public access to an AWS account that is used to host a business application or data lake will protect it from accidental public exposure. Our goal is to clarify that web hosting is not allowed to public access. These settings can be accessed via S3 console, command-line interface, or S3 API. Uncategorized
